Summary
The second oldest of all the Scottish regiments, the Royal Scots Fusiliers were first raised in 1678 with the sole purpose of rooting out and destroying various groups of armed Covenanters who were posing a growing threat to the central authority of church and state. The regiments most famous officer was Sir Winston Chuchill, who comanded the 6th Battalion (Territorial Army) for a few months in 1916 while in disgrace after Gallipoli. The reorganisation of the British Army in the late 1950s led to the amalgamation of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and the Highland Light Infantry (Glasgow Regiment) to form the Royal highland Fusiliers. initially the prospect of merging a Lowland and Highland regiment was viewed with some misgiving in Scotland, the amalgamation ended up producing a regiment of outstanding quality.
