//The Look
Do you remember how trendy it was to wear studs and spikes all over in the last year as part of a very punk style? From cardigans to tennis shoes! The trend got so popular that it even was the theme of the MET Gala 2013 organized by the Costume Institute. I love neo punk style! In fact, one of my most favorite rings is a tiny skull.
My tartan shirt has something to do with that… but not completely. Actually, we can say this outfit is closer to the neo-grunge style, with the leather jacket wrapped around my hips (so nineties!), mixed with pumps and mirrored sunglasses. As you can see, everything very eclectic.
Now for the explanations:
FIRST THE TARTAN PATTERN
This pattern has an ancestral existence in Ireland, which distinguished the different clans. Only over time did the tartan pattern become a status symbol in English society.
NOW THE PUNK
Punk was a cultural phenomenon that was worn in the seventies in London. Punk brought together not only young rebels but also students and the unemployed that were looking to break out against severely conservative English society. This movement involved music, its own ideas and of course, a very particular look that keeps inspiring fashion still today: chains, ripped jeans and skirts, tartan cloth, leather, tacks, boots (we have to mention here Dr. martens boots!), dark makeup and crazy hair.
The queen of punk style was the now-famous designer Vivienne Westwood. Her boutique got very famous when The Sex Pistols adopted the same look. Even today Vivienne’s rebellious designs don’t leave anyone indifferent in the fashion world.
THE GRUNGE
Now we have to go back in the time to the nineties: grunge was born as a subculture of punk, adding clothing that made for a more relaxed and grubby look. That’s why in grunge we can find so many loose shirts and relaxed pants; in short, it is aesthetically much less confrontational than in punk, resulting in an unkempt look.
NEO PUNK AND NEO GRUNGE
In the last two years, we have seen how punk and grunge have returned in the most important runways around the world, but with a twist: now all the punk and grunge garments are shown in more chic and sophisticated outfits, but still reminiscent of their original inspirations. Everything is more subtle and eclectic at the same time, so much so that we can find even tartan dresses that remind us more of romanticism than punk.
